New York Fair Trial Free Press Conference (2018)
A hypothetical exploring issues involving the media, law enforcement, lawyers and the courts, with participation by an experienced panel and the audience.
Featuring a distinguished panel of federal and state judges, prosecutors, print and broadcast journalists, in-house media counsel, and relevant outside counsel, this program will explore the interplay of First Amendment rights to attend and report on trials, protection of the press and its sources and the Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial.
The program will consider issues that arise when explosive and highly confidential documents are put in the hands of a journalist from confidential sources, criminal law concerns that attract the attention of federal prosescutors, access to court proceedings and filings for a matrimonial matter and a domestic violence prosecution – all involving a very public official.
This program combines a discussion of a hypothetical case scenario with an overview of media law.
