This popular, recurring program will review current hot topics and trends in the Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Laws, with a focus on recent statutory amendments and recent New York Court of Appeals decisions, and on issues relating to information technology. Ongoing, high-profile issues, such as dealing with a public body’s “Executive Session,” notice requirements, email and the generation or extraction of information maintained electronically, and grounds for denials of FOIL requests, will be addressed. 

 

The program speaker is Robert J. Freeman, Esq., Executive Director since 1976 of the New York State Committee on Open Government. He received his law degree from New York University and a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Mr. Freeman has addressed numerous government-related organizations, bar associations, and media groups and has lectured at various colleges and universities. He has also spoken on open government laws and concepts throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, the Far East, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Most recently, Mr. Freeman was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York State Associated Press Association.
