New York County Supreme Court Justice Honored With 2021 Kay Crawford Murray Award

New York County Supreme Court Justice Lisa A. Sokoloff is the 2021 recipient of the Kay Crawford Murray Memorial Award presented by the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) Women in Law Section. Justice Sokoloff will receive her award on Jan. 19 during NYSBA’s Annual Meeting.
Named in honor of Kay Crawford Murray, this award honors an individual, who in the spirit of Ms. Murray, recognizes the value of diversity in the legal profession and is committed to advancing attorneys who are women. Murray, who passed away in 2018, was the first recipient of the award in 2008.
“Justice Sokoloff has been deeply committed to mentoring women and to diversity her entire career and has brought her dedication to mentoring women into the New York State court system. She has positively impacted many women attorneys, helping them achieve success in the legal profession,” said Terri Mazur, chair of the Women in Law Section. “Her tireless work to advance female lawyers is an inspiration to all of us.”
Upon becoming a judge in 2013, Sokoloff joined the gender fairness committee of the New York County Criminal Court where she advanced breast cancer awareness. Then as co-chair, she developed informative programming on human trafficking, the consequences of convictions on young people of color and issues facing the LGBTQ community in the criminal court.
Sokoloff received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Vassar College and her J.D. from Boston University School of Law. She is admitted to practice in New York, Connecticut and the U.S. Eastern and Southern districts of New York.
Honoring attorneys who render extraordinary service to the public and the profession is part of NYSBA’s Annual Meeting tradition. The 144th Annual Meeting will focus on more than 65 different topics each day from Jan. 19 to 29. Subjects include Employment Litigation in the Wake of COVID-19, Conducting a Jury Trial in the Shadow of COVID-19, State Tax Implications From the Pandemic and Vaccines: Legal Mandates and Challenges.
The Presidential Summit on Wednesday, Jan. 27, will look at The COVID-19 Pandemic: Legal, Constitutional, and Public Health Issues. One of the nation’s top constitutional law scholars, Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of Berkeley Law, and Irwin Redlener, a pediatrician, public health activist, author, academic, and advisor, will speak at the event.
Other featured speakers at the Annual Meeting include Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Pascal Saint-Amans, director of the Centre for Tax Policy and Administration, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Jeh Johnson, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.
