Jeremy A. Cohen of Manhattan, an associate at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, is the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Service Award, given by the Law, Youth and Citizenship Committee of the New York State Bar Association.

The award was presented to Cohen at the State Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in New York City on January 29. It recognizes an attorney who has made an outstanding contribution to law-related education and improved understanding of the legal and judicial systems.

Cohen has volunteered with Legal Outreach, Inc. for 16 years, since he was a first-year law student at Columbia Law School. The nonprofit organization helps New York City high school students develop legal skills, including persuasive writing, critical thinking and public speaking. He has served as a mock trial coach, fundraiser and a member of Legal Outreach’s advisory board.

“Jeremy Cohen is a dedicated leader who has had a positive impact upon countless students. He understands how law-related education projects can provide a path forward for teens. His work at Legal Outreach reflects that,” said Richard Bader, an Albany attorney, educator and chair of the State Bar Association’s Law, Youth & Citizenship Committee (LYC). “We are pleased to recognize his devotion and commitment to civics education.”

Cohen has organized and supervised the Legal Outreach internships since 2005. Interns spend a week acting as associates at law firms, learning about practice areas and delivering oral arguments at mock trials. He also funds annual college scholarships for program graduates each year.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Cohen concentrates his practice in commercial litigation, real estate litigation and false advertising cases. He lives in Rye Brook.

The Law, Youth and Citizenship Program (www.lycny.org), under the guidance of the State Bar Association’s 25-member LYC Committee, is one of the largest civics and law-related education networks in the nation. It delivers resources and programs to schools throughout New York State.

The 75,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
