The New York State Bar Association’s Task Force on Free Expression in the Digital Age will host a special event, “The Crisis in Local Journalism: Are Nonprofits the Answer?” on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Columbia Law School.

The event is free, open to the public, and will be livestreamed.

As the traditional business model for local news media has become harder to sustain in a digital marketplace, nonprofits are being asked to play a larger role in the news industry. They have included specialized news outlets dealing with topics like climate change and social justice, investigative journalism nonprofits and smaller entities covering local communities in the way that for-profit dailies once did. The forum will focus on the possibilities and limitations of nonprofit journalism as a means of filling the gap left by the decline in traditional journalism outlets.

Arato Bach, and co-chair of the task force, will moderate the event. Panelists include Paul Bass, editor, New Haven Independent; Carroll Bogert, president, The Marshall Project; Jennifer Borg, of counsel at Pashman Stein and former general counsel of North Jersey Media Group; David Bralow, First Amendment and newsroom counsel, First Look and The Intercept; Sharon Chan, vice president of philanthropy, The New York Times; Jennifer Preston, vice president of journalism, Knight Foundation; and Dick Tofel, president, ProPublica.

Hank Greenberg, president of the New York State Bar Association and shareholder at Greenberg Traurig; Gillian Lester, dean and Lucy G. Moses professor of law at Columbia Law School; and David McCraw, deputy general counsel of The New York Times and co-chair of the task force, will give opening remarks.
