Derek Chauvin Conviction Marks A New Beginning for America
4.21.2021
Scott M. Karson, president of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), issued the following statement regarding the Derek Chauvin verdict:
“The decision of a Minneapolis jury to convict Derek Chauvin of murder marks a new beginning for America. For too long, police have killed people of color with impunity and officers have acted with the certainty that juries would not hold them accountable. The videos showing George Floyd’s last moments finally forced our nation to face the reality of our shameful history and to demand that the civil liberties our founding fathers envisioned be accorded to all. While we can rejoice in the jury’s verdict, we cannot rest until we bring a halt to the unnecessary slaughter of our neighbors. The New York State Bar Association’s Task Force on Racial Injustice and Police Reform will be recommending ways to enshrine justness and fairness in our state’s and our nation’s police departments and in society as a whole. We pledge to work tirelessly with lawmakers and policymakers until this vision becomes a reality.”
