Separating Fact from Fiction: Upcoming NYSBA Webinar Examines Britney Spears’ Conservatorship

At 39 years old, Britney Spears has sold out stadiums, exceeded 100 million in worldwide record sales and amassed a net worth of more than $60 million. At the same time, she claims she cannot use her credit card, hire a contractor, or make decisions about her own health without her father’s approval.

Is this normal under a conservatorship or is it time to #FreeBritney?

The New York State Bar Association will examine the reality of conservatorships on the upcoming live webinar “Conservatorship: What If Britney Spears Resided In New York State? What New York Lawyers Should Know.” It will take place on Tuesday, July 20 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Led by speaker Elizabeth A. Adinolfi (Phillips Nizer), this program will educate attorneys on New York’s move away from restrictive conservatorships to a more autonomous system for those who are impaired. Lawyers will learn how to calm clients’ fears about the guardianship system and how to help protect an incapacitated person from harm while safeguarding their liberties. It also will look at how New York’s system differs from other states.

The program is sponsored by NYSBA’s Committee on Continuing Legal Education, as well as the Elder Law and Special Needs and Trusts and Estates Law sections.
