Human Trafficking In Asia: Modern-Day Forms Of Slavery

This program aims to put a spotlight on human trafficking in Asia, and in particular, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. 

Human trafficking is defined by the United Nations as the “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by improper means (such as force, abduction, fraud, or coercion) for an improper purpose including forced labor or sexual exploitation.”  There are many forms of human trafficking today.) to: 

 Article 3(a) of the UN Trafficking in Persons Protocol (2000) defines human trafficking (trafficking in persons) as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability, or the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation, including at a minimum, sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs. There are many forms of human trafficking today. 

The panelists below will discuss the new challenges being faced in combatting the different forms of modern-day human trafficking as well as the relevant current legal framework and the gaps therein.
