Legal Issues Surrounding COVID-19, Cryptocurrency, and Criminal Justice Reform Highlight Virtual Annual Meeting Jan 18. to 28

New York State Attorney General Letitia James To Keynote the Presidential Summit
The New York State Bar Association’s 145th Annual Meeting will feature a wide range of legal issues including an assessment of the #MeToo movement, transgender rights, the coronavirus pandemic, cannabis, cryptocurrency, criminal justice reform, and more.
Court of Appeals Judge Anthony Cannataro; Lily Batchelder, assistant secretary for tax policy, Department of the Treasury; and retired Court of Appeals Judge Leslie Stein, director of the Government Law Center at Albany Law School, will be among the high-profile speakers taking part in this event. The all-virtual Annual Meeting will kick off on Jan. 18 and conclude on Jan. 28.
Keynote speakers and panels of prominent lawyers will participate in more than 65 different programs, the pinnacle of which will be the Presidential Summit on Jan. 20. The summit will focus on two leading social justice and civil rights issues: a reevaluation of the #MeToo Movement, and the intersection of transgender rights and sports. New York State Attorney General Letitia James will be the keynote speaker.

- An Overview and Analysis of Pandemic-Related Business Litigation in New York: What’s Happening Now and What to Expect Next – Commercial and Federal Litigation Section – Wednesday, Jan. 20, 3:10 p.m. – 4:35 p.m.
- Post-COVID Custody Issues, Vaccines and Telephonic Hearings – Family Law Section – Friday, Jan. 21, 2:05 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- The Ethics of Working Remotely During The Pandemic And Beyond – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
- The State of the Economy Amid the Ongoing Pandemic and What it Means for Overall Growth, Interest Rates and Monetary Policy and the Impact of Recent and Proposed Legislation – Elder Law and Special Needs Section – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 5:15 p.m. – 6:05 p.m.
- Virtual Summary Jury Trial Demonstration: To Vax or Not to Vax, That is The Question – Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law and Trial Lawyers Sections – Friday, Jan. 28, 8:40 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.
NYSBA’s Task Force on Racism, Social Equity and the Law will examine how district attorneys and their staff can be valuable partners in reforming the criminal justice system on Prosecutors and the Color of Justice: The Role of the Prosecutor in Reforming the Criminal Justice System. It will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. New York Inspector General Lucy Lang will moderate the panel of Alvin Bragg, district attorney of New York County; John J. Flynn, district attorney of Erie County; Eric Gonzalez, district attorney of Kings County; and Mimi Rocah, district attorney of Westchester County.
Jonathan Kanter, assistant attorney general for the Antitrust Division, U.S. Department of Justice, will speak during NYSBA’s Antitrust Law Section’s virtual reception beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24,
At 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, Lily Batchelder, assistant secretary for tax policy, Department of the Treasury, will deliver the keynote speech at the Tax Section’s virtual awards luncheon.
The meeting of NYSBA’s Judicial Section will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, and include a keynote speech from former Court of Appeals Judge Leslie Stein, director of the Government Law Center at Albany Law School.
