Joseph BizubName: Joseph Bizub
Hometown: North Caldwell, NJ
Law School: Brooklyn Law School
Graduation Year: 2024

What inspired you to go to law school?

In high school, I competed on the mock trial team where I was lucky enough to have a coach that sparked my interest in law and encouraged me to further pursue it. From this experience, I realized I enjoyed legal advocacy and how as a lawyer, I can impact those around me.

What area of the law interests you and why?

Currently, I am interested in real estate, intellectual property, and emerging technology law. Over the past couple of years, I have been exposed to these practice areas and found working with entrepreneurs and innovative or unsettled areas of law to be exciting. I am looking forward to further pursuing these practice areas after law school.

What extracurriculars are you involved in and how have they impacted your experience?

Currently, I serve as an editor for the Brooklyn Entertainment & Sports Law Blog, Operations Coordinator for the Intellectual Property Law Association, and Blockchain Manual Editor for the Blockchain & Metaverse Society. I am also a member of the New York State Bar Association Task Force on Emerging Digital Finance and Currency. I am involved in all these extracurriculars because I either had a preexisting or newfound interest in these spaces. These extracurriculars have afforded me a chance to surround myself with people of similar interests, to introduce myself to new areas of law, develop relevant skills, and refine my focus through law school.

What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?

After graduation, I hope to further pursue my legal interests and develop a practice at an innovative firm.

What advice would you give to your fellow law students?

Pave your own path. In law school, it is easy to get corralled into following a career path of a “typical lawyer.” Every path to and through law school is unique. If there is any area or industry that is of interest, take the time to explore it and connect with people of similar interests. Law school affords us a lot of opportunities to learn what type of lawyer we want to be, but it is incumbent on us to take advantage of these opportunities. Do not be afraid to do something different than those around you.

Why should other law students join NYSBA?

The professional development, educational, and career resources are incredibly helpful to guide law students through law school and beyond. Additionally, the NYSBA community is active, supportive, and expansive, making it easy to find legal communities and mentors. As someone who is involved with a NYSBA Task Force, I have seen a lot of the benefits the organization has to offer and encourage everyone to join.
