What inspired you to go to law school?

I was inspired to go to law school through personal experiences which have shaped who I am as a person and as a future legal professional. My parents had divorced when my siblings and I were very young. My father was an attorney, and my mother knew very little about the legal field. Throughout the process of their divorce, my mom found an attorney who went the extra mile to make sure that herself and children were taken care of despite her lack of understanding of the legal system. To this day, her story inspires me to push the envelope in my developing legal career and become an attorney worthy of earning a clients trust and confidence.

What area of the law interests you and why?

Both Medical Malpractice law and Family law interest me. After working under a student practice order in the Family Violence Litigation Clinic at Albany Law School, I was granted the opportunity to help families navigate difficult situations happening in their lives. That internship allowed me to understand the importance of acting as a voice for minors in family proceedings and that helping turn negatives into positives are truly the most rewarding part of becoming a lawyer. Prior to law school I was inspired by an attorney who took me under his wing and allowed me to work on medical malpractice cases with him. That experience sparked my interest in studying what the duty of care is for a physician and the devastating effects of what a breach of that duty can unfortunately result in.

What extracurriculars are you involved in and how have they impacted your experience?

I have been involved in Family Law Society as their previous 2L Class Representative and now as their current 3L Class Representative. I have recently been chosen for publishing my writing piece titled “Intersex Infants & Unjustified Surgical Intervention” in the NYSBA Health Law Journal.  These experiences have allowed me to extend my reading and research beyond just law school assignments and has given me an opportunity to develop working relationships with my peers and professors.

What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?

After graduation, I hope to work with a firm who passionately represents clients and provides them with support needed along the way. I am looking forward to putting not only the analytical skills I have learned from my professors and mentors into action, but the compassion and desire to make a difference through every client.

What advice would you give to your fellow law students?

I would advise my fellow law students to stay true to yourself in pursuing your career. No matter what obstacles you may face or successes you may achieve, always remember where you started and those that supported you throughout your law school journey.

Why should other law students join NYSBA?

By joining the NYSBA as a law student, it gives you the opportunity to read and learn about pressing issues in the legal community that are not often taught in the typical law school curriculum. It allows students to connect with other attorneys in the field through various section meetings and informational journals.
