Join the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section for a discussion about the life of Hon. Guido Calabresi, Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Hofstra’s Professor Norman I. Silber is the author of a new book about Judge Calabresi’s (“Guido’s”) remarkable life, based on more than a decade of interviewing. As Professor Paul Horwitz explains, the result is “a unique amalgam of oral history and biography, with supplementary commentaries to explain, elaborate, validate, and interpret and situate the personal narrative within its larger historical context.” It is an expansive two-volume work: this hour-long program will focus on topics that should be of special interest to NYSBA members and especially the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section — including his perspective on appellate civil litigation and his thoughts on the importance of the independence of the judiciary. 

Many attorneys do not realize that Judge Calabresi’s Italian family was of Jewish heritage, and that along with his family he fled to America on the eve of World War II to avoid political and religious persecution.  His family arrived in America without money or social standing, but his talents and good fortune helped him to thrive as a student and to eventually become a leading legal scholar and a founder of the field of law and economics.  He was a legendary Dean of Yale Law School and for the past 30 years he has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Judge Guido Calabresi was appointed United States Circuit Judge in July 1994, and began his tenure on September 16, 1994. Prior to his appointment, he was Dean and Sterling Professor at Yale Law School, where he began teaching in 1959, and is now Sterling Professor Emeritus and Professorial Lecturer in Law. Judge Calabresi received his B.S. degree, summa cum laude, from Yale College in 1953, a B.A. degree with First Class Honors from Magdalen College, Oxford University, in 1955, an LL.B. degree, magna cum laude, in 1958 from Yale Law School, and an M.A. in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University in 1959. A Rhodes Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif, Judge Calabresi served as the Note Editor of The Yale Law Journal, 1957-58, while graduating first in his law school class. Following graduation, Judge Calabresi clerked for Justice Hugo Black of the United States Supreme Court. He has been awarded some fifty honorary degrees from universities in the United States and abroad and is the author of seven books and more than one hundred articles on law and related subjects.

Professor Norman Silber is a Professor of Law at Hofstra Law. He teaches and writes in areas that relate to consumer law, commercial law, legal history and nonprofit corporations. He joined the Hofstra Law faculty in 1989, after practicing with the New York City law firm of Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, and serving as a law clerk to Judge Leonard I. Garth of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Prior to becoming a law school student, Professor Silber taught history at Sarah Lawrence College and Yale University. He is an interviewer for the Columbia University Oral History Research Office.
