The New York State Bar Association is releasing a revised edition of its free business planning guidebook for lawyers. The Planning Ahead Guide: How to Establish an Advance Exit Plan to Protect Your Clients’ Interest in the Event of Your Disability, Retirement or Death offers step-by-step information for attorneys on how to plan for the unexpected.

The 2023 edition is the third revision of the guide, compiled by the New York State Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Committee. The guide outlines the steps a lawyer must take to protect clients in the event of a sudden inability to continue to practice. The new edition of the Guide is revised to reflect present day realities including social media platforms, planning tools, forms and government regulations.

“The Planning Ahead Guide is a resource we offer to attorneys to protect themselves, their business and their families,” said New York State Bar Association President Richard Lewis. “We encourage all New York attorneys to take advantage of this valuable resource.”

Since the Guide was first published in 2005, it has helped countless attorneys with business and estate planning. A solid plan protects both the attorney and client’s interest in the event of an accident, disability or unexpected death.

The guide is free for all attorneys to download here. It is also available for purchase in print at https://nysba.org/nysba-online-store.
