What happens when political speech causes friction and disputes in the workplace? What rights do employees have when speaking about current events on social media? Many businesses and employers are struggling with these issues due to the recent conflict in the Middle East.

An upcoming New York State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Course, “’Free Speech’ in the Workplace: Social Media, Off-Duty Conduct, and Political Speech,” will review the legal and practical issues arising from employee speech.

“While everyone has the right to free speech, it is important for employers and employees to know its limits,” said Richard Lewis, president of the New York State Bar Association. “This program is a must for anyone looking for real world guidance on handling these contentious issues in the workplace.”

The panel will examine legal protections, anti-discrimination laws and employee rights related to free speech – especially as it applies under the National Labor Relations Act and New York Labor Law. It will take place on March 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The featured speakers are:

  • Sara Kula, employment attorney, mediator and arbitrator at Kula Law.
  • Greg B. Reilly, labor and employment attorney at Bond, Schoeneck & King.
  • Jennie Woltz, founding partner and employment and labor attorney at Woltz & Folkinshteyn.

Kula will moderate the discussion.

The association’s Labor and Employment Law Section is sponsoring the program. Learn more and register here. Journalists interested in attending should contact Rebecca Melnitsky at [email protected] or Susan DeSantis at [email protected].
