As more attorneys incorporate artificial intelligence into their practices, the New York State Bar Association is hosting a program on how to use the technology in a safe and ethical way.

“AI technologies can benefit us by reducing repetitive tasks, setting priorities, and optimizing productivity,” said Domenick Napoletano, president of the New York State Bar Association. “But there are also pitfalls and dangers for attorneys. It is important for lawyers to fully understand this technology, which is having a profound impact on society. I look forward to an educational and informative session.”

The course, “Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2025: Harnessing AI for Smarter Time Management,” will take place on Wednesday, May 14, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Bar Center at 1 Elk Street, Albany. A livestream will also be available. Journalists are invited to attend but must contact Rebecca Melnitsky at rmelnitsky@nysba.org.

Paul J. Unger, a prominent speaker, writer and thought leader in the legal technology industry, will lead the class. He is a founding partner of Affinity Consulting Group, a nationwide legal technology consulting company.

Attendees will learn about the technologies available for legal professionals and what questions to ask before selecting an AI tool. There will also be an interactive session to show users how to train their AI tools to deliver the desired information.

The topics covered will include ethical use of AI as well as its fundamental concepts – including machine learning and natural language processing.

The course is free for New York State Bar Association members, as one of the many benefits of the association’s new, all-inclusive membership package. Attendees will receive three Continuing Legal Education credits.
