New York State Bar Association Supports Vital Revisions to the Freedom of Information Law
6.17.2025
Kathleen Sweet, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the Legislature’s modernization of the Freedom of Information Law:
“Ambiguity in New York’s Freedom of Information Law has led to the public being denied vital and timely information. In 2021, the New York State Bar Association’s Task Force on Free Expression in the Digital Age found that a lack of clarity in the law created a muddled timeline to respond to requests from the media, and delayed public disclosure. This legislation corrects this deficiency. We applaud the New York State Legislature and the sponsors of this legislation, Senator James Skoufis and Assembly Member Steven Raga, for taking this important step toward advancing New Yorkers’ ability to gain information from their government. We look forward to working with Gov. Hochul to ensure that this becomes law.”
