Abigail Levy, the new chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section, said that her aim is to strengthen the section by gaining members and reorganizing.

“Our goal is to expand our membership by reengaging some members who had been involved in the past and may have stepped away during the pandemic. We also want to recruit new attorneys and have a greater upstate presence while also taking a close look at our internal structure,” she said.

To that end, the section has established a Reengagement Task Force that is focused on recruiting and a Reimagining Task Force that is examining the section’s committees.

“We have to decide what our committee structure should look like while also ensuring that their efforts align with our goals. We are also reaching out to members who have joined the section in the past 24 months to get them more involved, and we want to expand our excellent CLE programming.”

In the shorter term, the section is working on the agenda for its fall meeting that is scheduled for Oct. 17 to 19 in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario before turning its attention to the Annual Meeting. Levy added that the section is also exploring a joint spring meeting with another section.

As for herself, Levy became involved with the New York State Bar Association through her husband, Bruce Levine, who was a co-chair of one of the Labor and Employment Law Section’s committees.

“I always attended the fall meetings with him and at some point, I realized this is a great group of people and so I needed to get involved. The next thing I knew I was a co-chair of the CLE committee and so I just jumped in, and my role grew organically from there.”

Levy is the deputy general counsel and executive secretary of the New York City Office of Collective Bargaining and has a private labor arbitration and mediation practice. She previously worked at both union side and management side firms where her practice focused on labor law, ERISA and employee benefits law.
