New York State Bar Association President Kathleen Sweet issued the following statement about the House of Representatives passing an appropriations measure that includes funding for the Legal Services Corporation:

“For decades, the New York State Bar Association has supported the work of the Legal Services Corporation and has steadfastly advocated for its funding. Civil legal aid stabilizes families, homes and incomes, allowing adults to work and children to meet their full potential at school. The New York State Bar Association encourages the Senate to act swiftly to pass this key measure.”

On Thursday, the House passed the measure. Rep. Grace Meng, and other members of the New York congressional delegation, successfully secured $540 million for the Legal Services Corporation – a $240 million increase over what the House Republican bill provided and $519 million more than the President’s request. At the end of May, the White House proposed eliminating the Legal Services Corporation, jeopardizing essential legal protections for children, families, veterans, and seniors. The restoration of funding for the Legal Services Corporation is one of the New York State Bar Association’s top legislative priorities.
