New Women In Law Section Chair Excited To Tackle Issues Involving Women and Families

Women in Law Section Chair Morghan Richardson is setting her sights on the State Capitol during her term, with the goal of expanding the section’s legislative subcommittee.
“It’s super important for us as women at a time when it feels like our rights are under attack, to stay at the forefront of what is being proposed and how we can be involved in that,” she said. “For my term I want to expand and grow our work on legislative issues, offering more opinions on legislation being put forward.”
Richardson is a partner and co-chair of the Matrimonial and Family Law Practice at Tarter, Krinsky and Drogin in New York City. She is a longtime volunteer in the section, who has worked on the section’s response to the 2022 Dobbs Supreme Court ruling and the educational campaign surrounding the New York ERA ballot referendum.
“Following the Dobbs decision, women from the section started connecting, asking ‘what can we do?’” Richardson recalls. “It was comforting, knowing you are not alone. Our rights are being impacted, but you’re not alone. Here is a group of women attorneys, and we’re going to do something. It was a great example of community.”
Richardson is also excited to work with the association’s President Taa Grays on her Family Court initiative. The effort will focus on finding solutions to reduce the backlog of cases, streamline the court and attract more attorneys.
“We want to be effective family law attorneys, and we are not right now because of the delays, staffing and funding problems,” Richardson acknowledges. “I am excited to be part of this initiative to improve the system and encourage others in private practice to do pro bono work in the Family Court.”
Richardson is encouraged by the recent growth of the section and attributes it to the group’s welcoming attitude. She says especially younger women are looking for places to connect with others.
“Our section makes it easy to get involved. You will meet people from all walks of life – not the same people you see in your practice area. It’s also great for networking. If I need a referral I just reach out to my contacts in the section because I know there is going to be an attorney in that area of practice.”
