New York State Bar Association Commemorates the 25^th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

On the 25^th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, New York State Bar Association President Taa Grays issued the following statement:

“I remember the sky being so blue that day. It was such a beautiful day. I was working at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. I went to the deli a block away from the office to pick up breakfast. The owner of the deli was complaining: how could a pilot not see the Twin Towers?! I thought it was odd myself – being a life-long New Yorker and never hearing of a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. And then the second plane crashed into the Twin Towers. This was not pilot error… it was a terrorist attack.

“On that day, within hours of the attack, our Committee on Mass Disaster Response coordinated with federal agencies to assist victims and their families. Our volunteer attorneys arrived in Manhattan and stayed for weeks. We helped families secure death certificates, stay in their homes, and qualify for government benefits. In the critical early stages, we handled several hundred cases a day.

“On the 25^th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we remember those we lost and those that helped.

“The New York State Bar Association’s mission is to be the leading voice for the legal profession by advancing the professional success of our members, equal access to justice, and the rule of law. NYSBA stayed true to its mission that day… and continues to do so today.”
