Key takeaways for American qualified lawyers in London
In this short video following the recent American-qualified lawyers in London (ALIL) and New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) International Section, UK Chapter event in London, kindly sponsored by CM Murray LLP, Partners Corinne Staves, Beth Hale and Andrew Pavlovic, speak with Senior Associate Kelsey Murrell about the key Employment, Partnership and Regulatory Law changes that US qualified lawyers need to know, in particular:
• UK employment rights are shifting and kick in earlier than many US lawyers expect: From 2027, unfair dismissal protection will apply after six months (not two years), the compensation cap will be removed, and claims will carry real financial weight even for senior, high earning professionals.
• Family friendly rights are expanding further and increasingly operate as day one protections: Enhanced leave entitlements, stronger redundancy protections for pregnant employees and new parents, and extended protected periods reflect a UK employment culture that prioritises security and work–life balance.
• The structure of UK law firms is evolving rapidly: External investment, alternative business models and PE interest are reshaping growth strategies, with knock on effects for recruitment, partner mobility and long term career planning.
• Partnership in the UK requires careful scrutiny, particularly for US lawyers: Although there are many similarities and the UK market has shifted to align more closely with the US legal market, capital contributions, profit sharing mechanics, exit provisions and post departure restrictions can differ from US norms and warrant close attention before accepting an offer.
• Regulation in England and Wales may be considered more interventionist than many US lawyers are used to: The SRA exercises broad oversight, with sustained focus on conduct, supervision, workplace culture and non financial misconduct, with particular focus in recent years on bullying and harassment.
• Recent court decisions have sharpened the spotlight on supervision and responsibility: Foreign qualified lawyers may conduct litigation in England under supervision – but firms will be expected to demonstrate robust oversight and accountability.
• Major regulatory change is still ahead: Reforms around client money, AML supervision and the responsible use of AI point to an increasingly structured and monitored regulatory environment.
• Culture is the common thread: Employment protections, partnership models and regulatory expectations collectively shape how UK law firms operate and what US qualified lawyers should factor into long term career decisions in London.
