December 11, 2018: State Bar President Michael Miller Honored with New York County Lawyers Association President’s Medal
12.11.2018
New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) President Michael Miller was presented with the Boris Kostelanetz President’s Medal by the New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) on Monday night. The award recognizes a NYCLA member with a distinguished record of dedication to the legal profession.
“NYCLA has played a big role in my life both professionally and personally and I am very proud to receive this prestigious award,” Miller said. “I have learned so much here and have made such truly wonderful friends. It is a great honor to have played a small role in NYCLA’s illustrious history.”
Miller is the first attorney to serve as president of both NYSBA and NYCLA since 1933 and only the fifth lawyer to hold both titles.
For over 30 years, Miller’s peers have recognized his tireless dedication to the law. This is evident by the number of accolades he has received from legal associations in New York and nationally.
Throughout his professional career, NYSBA, NYS Conference of Bar Leaders and the American Bar Association have honored Miller’s pro bono work. In 2002 he received, the ABA’s Pro Bono Publico Award, the highest award for pro bono service, for his role in the legal relief efforts in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
“Over the years, I have been constantly reminded that America is not merely a place on a map – it’s not a geographic location,” Miller said. “Rather it is a set of powerful ideas and principles firmly based upon the rule of law.”
Miller is a solo practitioner in Manhattan (Law Office of Michael Miller) where he focuses primarily on estate and trust work, including planning, administration, and litigation. Prior to his term as president of NYSBA, he was president-elect and chair of the House of Delegates. He has served on the Executive Committee as vice-president of the First Judicial District.
Other NYSBA activities include a founding member of the Elder Law Section, serving as its first newsletter editor, executive committee member and chair of several committees.
