Inside the Trump Impeachment Trial as it Unfolded With Stacey Plaskett

3.24.2021

By Susan DeSantis

In an upcoming New York State Bar Association webinar, Rep. Stacey Plaskett, a leading prosecutor in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, will provide exclusive behind-the-scenes details of how she and fellow House managers made their case before the U.S. Senate and a worldwide TV audience.

Plaskett, who is in her fourth term representing the Virgin Islands in Congress, will be the featured speaker at the April 8 CLE webinar, Litigating an Impeachment Trial of a U.S. President. The free program carries 1.0 MCLE credit in professional practice.

Impeachment is a rare process. This is the first time in U.S. history that we saw not one, but two impeachment trials in a little more than a year. Each Congress sets its own impeachment process, and Plaskett will discuss how this Congress handled the proceedings, committee hearings and general prosecution. She will also explain how decisions were made about timing and witnesses.

Plaskett, a former assistant district attorney in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, served in the Department of Justice as senior counsel under both Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson and his successor, James Comey. She earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and her Juris Doctorate from American University’s Washington College of Law.

The program, which will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be moderated by Jerry H. Goldfeder, special counsel at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan; and Ava Ayers, director of the Government Law Center and an assistant professor at Albany Law School. Goldfeder, who chaired the NYSBA Task Force on the Presidential Election, specializes in election and campaign finance law, public integrity investigations and regulatory compliance. Ayers, a member of the task force, worked for nine years in the office of the New York Attorney General, where she was a senior assistant solicitor general.

NYSBA President Scott M. Karson and Hilary F. Jochmans, the association’s policy director and the founder of Jochmans Consulting, will give welcoming remarks.
