January 27, 2014: New York State Bar Association Announces New Section Chairs

Seven newly appointed section chairs of the New York State Bar Association will take office during the State Bar’s Annual Meeting this week.
The 25 sections of the association publish material dealing with their fields of expertise, much of which is not available through commercial publishers. They also sponsor conferences, seminars and institutes, monitor legislation and conduct studies. Each section contributes to the association’s policy-making, both in subject areas and association-wide.
The new section chairs are:
Barbara J. Hart of White Plains (Lowey Dannenberg Cohen & Hart), is chair of the 513-member Antitrust Section. A graduate of Vanderbilt University and Fordham University School of Law, Hart is the chief operating officer and head of her firm’s securities litigation practice.
Thomas A. Reed of Manhattan is chair of the 1,630-member Corporate Counsel Section. A graduate of Haverford College and University of Pennsylvania School of Law, Reed is a legal consultant assisting companies with commercial contracts. He is a former in-house counsel for numerous telecommunications companies.
Stephen B. Rodner of Manhattan (Pryor Cashman) is chair of the 1,605-member Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section. A graduate of Columbia University and New York University Law School, Rodner’s practice includes transactional matters in all areas of the entertainment field involving theatre, film, television, home video, Internet and e-commerce.
Carole A. Burns of Rocky Pointe, is chair of the 2,800-member Senior Lawyers Section. A graduate of Hunter College and Fordham University School of Law, Burns is a retired private practitioner. She currently volunteers with Nassau/Suffolk Law Services, working on consumer and medical debt cases for low-income clients.
Robert H. Coughlin, Jr. of Saratoga (Flink Smith), is chair of the 2,530-member Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section. A graduate of Hamilton College and Albany Law School, Coughlin practices in the area of civil litigation with an emphasis on personal injury for injured persons as well as defendants, negligence, insurance law, fire and explosions, and commercial matters.
A. Michael Furman of Manhattan (Furman Kornfeld and Brennan), is chair of the 2,257-member Trial Lawyers Section. A graduate of St. John’s University and Brooklyn Law School, Furman concentrates his practice on defending lawyers, insurance brokers and other professionals in complex professional liability litigation in federal and state courts.
Ronald J. Weiss of Manhattan (Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom), is chair of the 4,747-member Trusts and Estates Section. A graduate of Yale University and Albany Law School, Weiss’ practice focuses on estate planning and taxation, as well as the representation of not-for-profit organizations, principally private foundations.
The 75,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
