Boston University School of Law Professor Nancy Moore, 2024 Sanford D. Levy Professional Ethics Award Winner - presented by the New York State Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics.Boston University School of Law Professor Nancy Moore will be honored with the Sanford D. Levy Professional Ethics Award from the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics for her lifetime of work. She will be presented with the award during the committee’s hybrid meeting on Wednesday, May 15, at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City.

Moore, a Nancy Barton scholar at Boston University where she has taught since 1999, is a nationally recognized leader in professional responsibility.

“Very few people have contributed more to an understanding of professional ethics than Nancy Moore. She is among the nation’s foremost authorities on one of the most critical subjects of our profession in addition to being a superb author, educator and role model,” said Richard Lewis, president of the New York State Bar Association.

Moore previously taught at Rutgers University School of Law where she offered the school’s first course in professional responsibility.

She has written extensively on attorney ethics including recent articles that include “Forming Start-up Companies: Who’s My Client?” and “The Future of Law as a Profession.” In 2022, she published a case book entitled “Professional Responsibility for Business Lawyers.”

Moore was the chief reporter for the American Bar Association Commission on Evaluation of the Rules of Professional Conduct and is a former chair and current member of the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination Test Drafting Committee.

“Professor Nancy Moore is a nationally renowned scholar and leader in the field of legal ethics. We recognize her lifetime achievement in the field and are pleased to honor her numerous contributions and commitments to the field of legal ethics,” said Brenda Dorsett of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company who is chair of the Committee on Professional Ethics.

A member of the Boston Bar Ethics Committee, Moore twice served as chair of the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Professional Responsibility and was an adviser to the American Law Institute’s Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers.

The American Bar Association presented her with its annual Michael Frank Professional Responsibility Award in 2021.

The award is named for Sanford D. Levy, a former member of the New York State Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics. It has been presented since 1982 to an individual or institution that, in the opinion of the committee, has contributed most to the understanding and advancement in the field of professional ethics.
