Richard Lewis, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement today about the appointment of former Court of Appeals Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick as the New York court system’s independent monitor on racial bias in the courts:

“The New York State Bar Association applauds the appointment of Judge Ciparick as the New York court system’s independent monitor to combat racial bias. Judge Ciparick brings her considerable experience as a judge in the Criminal Courts and at the Court of Appeals to the state court system. Her appointment as the first Latina judge to the Court of Appeals was historic. Judge Ciparick is the perfect choice to guide the court system as it navigates changes it may need to make as the result of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action.”
