New York State Bar Association Commends Governor, Legislature for Supporting Medical Aid in Dying

Kathleen Sweet, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement in response to the governor agreeing to sign S138/A136 authorizing the Medical Aid in Dying Act:
“New York State joins 11 other states in offering a dignified option for the terminally ill. The New York State Bar Association supported this law allowing mentally capable adults to have autonomy in their health care decisions. We thank Gov. Hochul and the state Legislature for their compassion.”
Background
The House of Delegates, the association’s governing body, voted to support this bill after a report from its Task Force on Medical Aid in Dying. The legislation was included in the New York State Bar Association’s legislative priorities for the 2025 session.
