The New York State Bar Association is hosting a virtual career fair on Sept. 28 to connect new lawyers with firms looking to hire. Whether you’re a paralegal, recent law school graduate, newly-admitted attorney, or an attorney practicing for years, this career fair is the place for you.  The two-hour event will connect applicants with 17 firms that have openings.

“We are providing resources for members to make the most of their careers at all levels. For new members, that means access to some of the most exciting career opportunities in the state,” said New York State Bar Association President Richard Lewis. “Employers in the public and the private sector need qualified candidates for their 0pen positions.”

Jo Ann Stuhler is the officer manager at Gale Gale and Hunt in Fayetteville. “We are looking to fill an associate attorney position with candidates who are from a recent graduate up to six years of experience.” She adds that the firm values candidates interested in a career in litigation with strong writing and interpersonal skills.

In addition to private firms, many opportunities are available in public service. Several county offices are hiring in Central and Western New York State as well as the Office of Attorney General. You can find a full list of participating firms and offices here.

Career Fair Preparation

New lawyers are invited to career workshops before the fair to work on resume and cover letter writing, interview techniques and other job-hunting skills. During the fair, candidates will have the opportunity to explore several areas of practice and learn from recruiters what employers are seeking.

Here are a few tips from our recruiters to help candidates prepare:

  • Wear professional clothing.
  • Come with a positive attitude and an eagerness to explore new opportunities.
  • Have materials that you want to share with employers ready to present.
  • Research the firms that will be at the fair ahead of the event.
  • Recognize you’ll get out of the fair what you put into it.
  • Treat every interview as an opportunity to learn.

Job seekers can register to attend the fair here.
