Domenick Napoletano, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the death of former President Jimmy Carter:

“The New York State Bar Association mourns the passing of Jimmy Carter at 100 years old. Our longest-lived president leaves a long legacy of service to this country and its citizens. From his beginnings as a humble peanut farmer to his service in the U.S. Navy – including a course in nuclear power plant operation at Union College in Schenectady, New York – he dedicated his life to civil service.

As president, Jimmy Carter led the way on protecting the environment and human rights. Even after his presidency, he dedicated himself to the well-being of all people — including building homes for Habitat for Humanity in his home state of Georgia and championing global diplomacy. His Carter Center successfully led an international effort to eradicate Guinea-worm disease.

President Carter’s commitment to democracy and global health is an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.”
