New York State Bar Association Mourns the Death of Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter
5.9.2025

Domenick Napoletano, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the death of retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter:
“Justice Souter cared deeply about the U.S. Constitution and strongly supported adhering to precedent. Appointed by President George H.W. Bush, he was ideologically independent, and he valued standing up for the rule of law and protecting the court’s legitimacy. His commitment to interpreting the law rather than issuing opinions based on ideology was admirable. He venerated the court but also felt intense sorrow when a ruling let him down. Taken together, these are all the best qualities a judge can possess. He will be sorely missed.”
