T. Andrew Brown, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the deal reached by Congressional leaders Wednesday to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act:

“Passage of the Violence Against Women Act is one of the New York State Bar Association’s key legislative priorities. We agree wholeheartedly with President Biden that this long-overdue legislation is a matter of justice and compassion, and  we commend Congressional leaders for reaching bipartisan agreement. Our leaders are sending a message that women and girls must be protected from violence, deserve programs to support recovery from abuse and have an absolute right to legal representation. We must never let such historic legislation lapse again.“
