Brooklyn Family Court Judge Jacqueline Deane and Oneida County Family Court Judge Paul Deep will receive the Howard A. Levine Award for Excellence in Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare.

Judge Jacqueline Deane

As a trainer with the Legal Aid Society for Juvenile Rights and a professor at NYU Law Clinics, Judge Deane has dedicated her career to improving the juvenile justice and child welfare systems in New York State.  She is focused on imparting the highest ethical standards to her students.

“Her passion for helping children and families is contagious,” said New York State Bar Association President Kathleen Sweet. “She handles a full caseload in Brooklyn Family Court and teaches the next generation of family law and juvenile justice attorneys.”

Judge Paul Deep

Judge Deep balances work as a family court judge in Oneida County with his roles as presiding judge of Family Treatment Court and coordinating judge for the problem-solving courts serving five Central New York counties.

Judge Deep is a founding member of the juvenile treatment court in Oneida County and has been widely recognized for his commitment to teaching fellow attorneys.

“Under Judge Deep’s leadership, the Oneida Family Treatment Court has secured more than $2.7 million in multi-year grants to continue the innovative programs providing aid to Central New York’s children and families,” Sweet said. “Judge Deep’s programs offer hope and support so that parents in recovery can be reunited with their children.”

Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and the State of New York Rowan Wilson will present the awards. President Kathleen Sweet will deliver welcoming remarks.

The award ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Bar Center on Elk Street in Albany.

The award recognizes vital work undertaken to improve New York’s child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Past recipients include judges, child advocates, social workers, government leaders, court professionals, and community activists.

The Howard A. Levine Award is named for retired Court of Appeals Judge Howard A. Levine, who was the first chair of NYSBA’s Special Committee on Juvenile Justice, now known as the Committee on Children and the Law. He is a leader in the effort to improve New York’s child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
