On Sept. 19, 2025, the New York State Bar Association Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee co-sponsored the 18th Annual Caren Aronowitz Unity Diversity Program. Chialu (Gisele) Brown, Lina Maria Diaz, Judge Helena Heath, Albert Feuer, and Duane Frankson represented the DEI Committee as volunteers.

This event was presented by several organizations, including:

  • The Gender Fairness Committee, Supreme Court, Civil Term, New York County
  • The New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term Equal Justice in the Courts Committee and The Cultural Diversity Sub Committee
  • The New York County Clerk’s Office

The NYSBA DEI Committee was joined by dozens of local bar associations and court professional organizations. Together, they served a variety of ethnic dishes to the community, highlighting the rich cultural diversity represented within the legal profession.

Honoring Caren Aronowitz

The event honored the life and legacy of the late Caren Aronowitz, a beloved court employee known for her dedication to programming cultural events at the courthouse. Her contributions were celebrated throughout the program, underscoring her impact on the court community.

The New York State Courts Pipes and Drums band opened the ceremony with a stirring performance in full Scottish attire, setting an energetic and festive tone.

Community Engagement and Unity

Justice Suzanne J. Adams, Administrative Judge of New York County Supreme Court Civil Term, welcomed attendees and affirmed the importance of diversity in the legal profession. Justice Adams then introduced Valeriia Kuzmuk, a member of the Ukrainian Bar Association, who performed popular Ukrainian ballads for those in attendance.

The musical performance was followed by acknowledgments from Justice Deborah A. Kaplan. Special thanks were extended to Simone Abrams and Yesenia Herrera, members of the NYC County Court team, for their work planning the event.

Closing remarks were given by Justice Adam Silvera, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge, New York City Courts, who highlighted how diversity strengthens the legal profession and encouraged participants to enjoy the food and festivities.

The event was well attended by professionals and community members served by the courts. It provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate the diversity within the legal profession and to strengthen unity in the profession through service.
