NYSBA To Host Free Seminar on How Schools, Places of Worship, and Health Care Centers Can Respond to Immigration Enforcement
6.17.2025

The New York State Bar Association is hosting a free seminar addressing the impact of immigration law enforcement on schools, places of worship, and medical facilities.
“Schools, churches, synagogues, mosques and health care centers need to know what actions they can take to protect students, patients and employees while complying with the law,” said Kathleen Sweet, president of the New York State Bar Association. “This program is open to everyone because of the importance of the issue.”
The webinar, “Mission, Fiduciary Duty, and Immigration Law: New Challenges for Nonprofits,” will take place on Monday, June 23, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend.
Topics include executive orders, constitutional issues, the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, charity law, and the rights and responsibilities of institutions. The webinar will be particularly helpful to nonprofit boards, senior management and general counsel.
Journalists are invited but must contact Rebecca Melnitsky at rmelnitsky@nysba.org.
The speakers will be:
- Rose Cuison-Villazor, professor of law and chancellor’s Social Justice Scholar at Rutgers Law School.
- Michael de Freitas, attorney at William C. Moran & Associates.
- Tracey Miller, counsel at Brach Eichler.
- William Wang, assistant attorney general in the Charities Bureau of the New York State Office of the Attorney General.
Attendees will receive 1.5 Continuing Legal Education credits. The New York State Bar Association’s Business Law Section and Committee on Immigration Representation are sponsoring the program.
