Scott Fein of Albany, senior partner of Whiteman, Osterman & Hanna, is the 2021 recipient of the Jonathan Lippman Pro Bono Award presented by the 50+ Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association.

Fein will receive his award on Jan. 28 during the association’s Annual Meeting. The award recognizes dedicated senior members of the legal profession who have generously provided pro bono service in New York.

“Scott Fein is a fierce champion of the underserved and those living at the margins. His reputation among both the bench and the bar is one of impeccable character, extraordinary competence and unquestioned integrity and compassion,” said Anthony J. Enea of White Plains, chair of the 50+ Lawyers Section.

Fein has a long history of pro bono service, including 14 years representing plaintiffs in the racial profiling case of Brown v. State of New York. He also has served as pro bono counsel to the New York State Partnership Archives Trust, the New York State Public Authority Budget Office and Equinox.

Most recently, he has served as a senior fellow and pro bono adviser to the State University of New York’s Rockefeller Institute of Government Center for Law and Policy, focusing on immigrant resettlement.

Honoring attorneys who render extraordinary service to the public and the profession is part of NYSBA’s Annual Meeting tradition. The 144th Annual Meeting will focus on more than 65 different topics each day from Jan. 19 to 29. Subjects include Employment Litigation in the Wake of COVID-19, Conducting a Jury Trial in the Shadow of COVID-19, State Tax Implications From the Pandemic and Vaccines: Legal Mandates and Challenges.

The Presidential Summit on Wednesday, Jan. 27, will look at the COVID-19 Pandemic: Legal, Constitutional, and Public Health Issues.  One of the nation’s top constitutional law scholars, Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of Berkeley Law, and Irwin Redlener, a pediatrician, public health activist, author, academic, and advisor, will speak at the event.

Other featured speakers at the Annual Meeting include Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Pascal Saint-Amans, director of the Centre for Tax Policy and Administration, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Jeh Johnson, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.
