Over the past years, pro bono culture and institutions have experienced a vast transformation across the globe. In the U.S., within the last forty years pro bono has become centralized and streamlined, evolving from mostly ad-hoc, individual efforts into sophisticated pro bono programs and organizations that involve a wide variety of stakeholders. In the Spanish legal culture, pro bono is still a relatively foreign concept, but since 2010 a growing number of  law firms, bar associations, universities, and non-profit organizations have formalized pro bono programs, and clearinghouses have emerged to adequately match pro bono needs with pro bono resources. There are reasons for optimism in both countries, but the profession must pursue other strategies and continue exchanging best practices to increase pro bono culture and its impact on society. To that aim, this panel seeks to explore some of the challenges and opportunities within the contemporary global pro bono movement in terms of pro bono promotion and institutionalization.

The panel will include as speakers S. Todd Crider, partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and member of the executive committee of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, Javier Carvajal, partner at Pérez-Llorca and founding member of Fundación Pro Bono España and Juan Ignacio Alonso, partner at Ceca Magán, as well as founding member of Fundación Pro Bono España. The session will be co-moderated by Leire Larracoechea, Cofounder and Executive Director of Fundación Pro Bono España and Clifford J: Hendel, of Hendel IDR and founding member of Fundación Pro Bono España.
