Problem Gambling 101 and Ethical Obligations of Lawyers
Problem gambling is a growing but often overlooked issue that can have significant personal, financial, and professional consequences—particularly within the legal profession. This one-hour CLE program provides attorneys with a foundational understanding of problem gambling and its intersection with legal ethics and professional responsibility.
A representative from the New York Council on Problem Gambling will introduce “Problem Gambling 101,” including key warning signs, risk factors, and current prevalence data in New York. Participants will gain practical insight into how gambling-related harm may present in clients, colleagues, and within their own professional environments.
An experienced legal ethics attorney will then explore the ethical and fiduciary obligations implicated by problem gambling, including issues related to competence, diligence, safeguarding client funds, and reporting misconduct. The program will highlight how gambling-related impairment can affect an attorney’s ability to meet their professional responsibilities under applicable rules of professional conduct.
The session will also include guidance on how to respond when concerns arise, along with resources for confidential support, intervention, and treatment.
