The New York Department of State is reminding notaries that they must renew their commissions through the Department of State as a result of a change in the law in 2023.

Here are some tips:

Notary commission renewals can be done 90 days before the expiration date, which is printed on the notary license or ID card. The state is behind in mailing reminder postcards, and so notaries should check their expiration dates.

Notary commissions can be renewed online at https://businessexpress.ny.gov.

Under search applications, type notary, which links to the login page for ny.gov. The renewal application can be started under the “My Dashboard” tab. This same tab will update with any status changes after the renewal application is started.

Contact the Department of State Division of Licensing Services for assistance if the system does not locate the record. Contact the division at notary@dos.ny.gov   or call (518) 474-4429.
