Managing ADHD in the Context of Legal Work

Executive function refers to skills that allow us to plan and achieve goals. Though ADHD is sometimes characterized as “difficulty concentrating,” the condition typically affects executive function more broadly. For example, people with ADHD may also experience challenges with time management, organization, task initiation, and emotion regulation—all of which are essential to the practice of law.
This one-hour CLE program provides attorneys with a foundational understanding of ADHD and its intersection with legal work. The program will discuss how unmanaged ADHD can interfere with legal work.
This program will then provide practical strategies that can help attorneys manage their ADHD. These strategies may also be useful to people who don’t have ADHD but who nonetheless experience challenges with things like time management, or to people who want to support those who have ADHD.
This program will conclude with a review of NYSBA LAP resources that can support attorneys with ADHD—including a new support group beginning at the end of October.
Learning Objectives:
• Develop an understanding of ADHD and executive function challenges related to ADHD
• Recognize how unmanaged ADHD might negatively impact an attorney’s ability to meet their professional responsibilities
• Learn strategies that can help an attorney manage ADHD
• Identify resources and support services for attorneys with ADHD
