Campaigning While Female: Congresswoman Kathleen Rice Speaks on Gender and Diversity Issues Facing Vice Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris

U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice, a Long Island Democrat, will discuss the gender and diversity issues facing women on the campaign trail and in Congress at a Sept. 9 webinar focusing on California U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris’s historic vice-presidential run.

The webinar, “Campaigning While Female: Congresswoman Kathleen Rice Speaks on Gender and Diversity Issues Facing Vice Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris,” will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. The Women in Law Section sponsors the event.

“I thank the New York State Bar Association’s Women in Law Section for hosting this important discussion on the issues facing women running for office and in public service,” said Representative Kathleen Rice (NY-04). “As women in leadership positions, it is our duty to make sure the barriers and obstacles that we encountered are not faced by future generations as well. We’ve made progress over the years, but there is still so much more to be done before women can achieve equal representation and opportunity in the public arena. We must keep fighting for women’s equality and continue working together to address the gender and diversity issues facing women in professional life.”

Rep. Rice will speak about the challenges confronted by women in politics, the importance of strong female role models for young girls and the gender and diversity issues Harris faces during her campaign. Harris is the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to be nominated to run for national office by a major party, and only the fourth woman in U.S. history to be chosen for a presidential ticket.

Rice, who became Nassau County’s first female district attorney in 2006, was elected to represent New York’s 4th Congressional District in 2014. After serving as a prosecutor for more than two decades, she has focused her efforts in Congress on combatting gun violence and reforming the criminal justice system. She is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security, Facilitation and Operations, and vice chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

Rice has said she believes it’s crucial for young girls to have strong women role models. She has taken every opportunity to encourage girls to overcome gender biases and follow their dreams.

Terri Mazur, chair of the Women in Law Section, will moderate the discussion. The event is free for NYSBA members.
