LGBTI+ Rights in the Inter-American System: An Overview

This CLE will explore the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersex people (LGBTI+) from a regional perspective, through the evolution of legal frameworks within the Inter-American Human Rights System (IACHR). Throughout the course, various topics will be covered with the jurisprudence and consultive opinion, such as the protection of life, the right to marriage, legal name and gender changes for transgender people and the right to health. By the end of the class, participants are expected to have a basic understanding of the mechanisms available in the ISHR and the regional standards for protecting the human rights of LGBTI+ people.
