Military Cultural Competence, Veterans Treatment Court and Veterans Transfer Legislation

Those who served in the military have been influenced by factors specific to their service.  Influences come from branches, ranks and duty of service.  Many justice-involved veterans cope with serious issues such as alcohol and substance use, a mental health disorder, homelessness, unemployment and others. The Veterans Treatment Court can provide services and mentorship to justice-involved veterans to address these issues and needs.  In New York State, justice-involved veterans can access a Veterans Treatment Court in an adjacent county, if one doesn’t exist in the county where their case is pending.  This session will address how veterans hold the military as a source of identity.  The presenters will describe how Veterans Treatment Courts assist justice-involve veterans. The audience will learn about the removal and transfer legislation (CPL 230.31) which authorizes access Veterans Treatment Courts for eligible justice-involved veterans.
