New Horizons in Health Law: From Accessibility Compliance to AI Regulation

Program Description: The legal landscape of healthcare is undergoing rapid transformation. Join the NYSBA Health Law Section for an in-person CLE event that delves into two important areas reshaping healthcare delivery and compliance: the expansion of federal healthcare accessibility regulations and the growing legal and compliance challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. The accessibility session will examine new federal rules under Section 504, Section 1557, and recent DOJ medical equipment guidance, and explain their impact on hospitals, providers, and insurers. The AI session will examine emerging standards for AI oversight, liability, data privacy, security, and governance, offering guidance for legal and compliance professionals navigating this evolving field. This evening program will feature engaging presentations, practical takeaways, and a networking reception with peers across law, healthcare, and policy.
Session #1: Breaking Barriers Toward Inclusive Healthcare: Navigating the Evolving Healthcare Accessibility Regulatory Landscape
In the past year, sweeping changes to federal accessibility regulations—spanning Section 504, Section 1557, and medical diagnostic equipment standards—have created major new requirements for healthcare organizations. This CLE program will provide legal and healthcare professionals with a comprehensive analysis of these developments and their far-reaching implications. Panelists will explore key legal considerations, including non-discrimination obligations, accessibility requirements for medical diagnostic equipment, and the broader federal enforcement landscape. The discussion will also address the practical impact on providers, administrators, and compliance officers, offering guidance on how to implement best practices while mitigating legal and operational risk. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of standards and enforcement priorities shaping 2025 and beyond.

Session #2: AI Evolution in Healthcare: Navigating Legal and Compliance Challenges in a Rapidly Evolving Landscape
Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare practice and operations, reshaping clinical care, research, administration, and patient engagement. From AI-assisted diagnostics and predictive analytics to clinical trial management and operational efficiency, the potential is vast, but so are the risks. As AI adoption increases, healthcare organizations must confront challenges posed by regulatory compliance, liability, cybersecurity, data privacy, bias, and governance by Boards and operational leadership. This CLE program will provide legal and healthcare professionals with critical insights into the evolving regulatory landscape, including oversight of AI-powered medical devices and tools, liability risks, data privacy, security challenges, and standards for transparency and non-discrimination. Whether advising healthcare institutions or navigating compliance obligations, attendees will gain the knowledge to address the complex legal and policy questions shaping AI’s role in healthcare delivery, along with best practices for AI deployment—from evaluation and implementation to clinician involvement and governance oversight.
