The Audio-Visual Coverage of Judicial Proceedings: Laws, Policy and Tech | Sponsored by the Fund for Modern Courts
This program will offer the history of cameras in the courts in New York State. The program will take a look back at the causes of the original prohibition; the contours of the experimental law that, for about a decade, opened proceedings in New York’s trial courts to the media; and offer two comprehensive evaluations of the experimental law. The program will also set forth the findings of a new and comprehensive survey of the variety of laws and the policies of all fifty states and the District of Columbia concerning audiovisual coverage of proceedings in courtrooms. The program will discuss recent legislation to permit cameras in the courts and will provide the pros and the cons for audiovisual coverage from the perspective of practicing lawyers, litigants, the court system, and the First Amendment. It will also touch on the impact of modern technology.
The panelists joining this CLE have varied backgrounds, all with experience and insight into the use of cameras in courtrooms, the laws across the country as well as the legislative battle in New York State.
