Well-Being in the Legal Workplace: A Focus on Substance Abuse and Where to Get Help

Alcohol use disorder is the most common substance use disorder in the country affecting nearly 3 million people each year and has long been a leading cause of death. National studies show that for legal professionals, the situation is even more serious. 1 in 5 practicing attorneys report problematic drinking, which is more than 3x the already alarming national average.
Although less common than alcohol, substance use disorders involving opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and marijuana also impact members of the legal profession.
This issue is not limited to seasoned attorneys–law students, new lawyers, judges, and other allied legal professionals are at risk. Given the legal profession’s often high-stress, high-stakes work, depression, anxiety, vicarious trauma, burnout, high ethical standards, perfectionism, family issues, career stress, and other mental health challenges contribute to this issue and complicate help seeking.
Health and wellness initiatives focused on the legal field have long included concerns about addiction and substance misuse. Intervention is key and help is available.
This session will provide information about the intersection of substance abuse and the legal profession, the ethical implications of untreated substance use issues, what to do if you are worried about yourself or someone else, and resources for confidential help through the Lawyer Assistance Program and Committee.
