The New York State Bar Association honored Eileen Travis with its Ray of Hope Award for her extensive work helping lawyers overcome substance use and mental health issues.

She is the founder and executive director of the New York City Bar Association’s Lawyer Assistance Program, which provides free, confidential help to thousands in the legal community. Travis, a leader and pioneer in the field, applies a holistic and empathetic approach to recovery and well-being.

“Through her work, Eileen Travis has lessened the stigma of seeking help for substance abuse and mental health concerns,” said New York State Bar Association president Domenick Napoletano. “She is teaching all of us that self-care aids not only yourself, but your family and your clients.”

The Ray of Hope Award, which was presented Nov. 14 in Albany, is named after Ray Lopez, a pioneer in addressing the health and wellness needs of attorneys and the first director of the New York State Bar Association’s Lawyer Assistance Program. Lopez created dozens of Lawyers Helping Lawyers groups across New York State.

Each year, the Capital District Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee recognizes those who make significant contributions to its mission of inspiring hope in recovery for lawyers struggling with substance use issues and mental health concerns.

The New York State Bar Association’s Lawyer Assistance Program is a no-cost, confidential service available to assist lawyers, judges, law students and their families who are struggling with mental health or substance use issues. The Capital District Lawyers Helping Lawyers is a peer support group of legal professionals. For more information, please visit www.nysba.org/lap .
