2022 Midterms: What’s Next for NY State Legislature and the Congress?

We have an election 2022 wrap up on this episode of Miranda Warnings Roundtable. Despite a closer than usual race for governor in New York and the four House seats that flipped to Republican control, the Democrats swept statewide offices in November. On the federal level, the predicted red wave never happened.

Democrats actually gained a seat in the U.S. Senate and have a substantial minority in the House of Representatives. Midterm elections involving unpopular presidents usually go against the party in power.

Experts believe that the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization aided the Democrats in retaining seats in the House and gaining a Senate seat.

New York Democrats would have likely held onto more of their Congressional seats if the New York Court of Appeals in Harkenrider v. Hochul hadn’t rejected the New York State Legislature’s redistricting proposal.

Join host David Miranda and guests Liz Benjamin and Vin Bonventre for a lively discussion.
