"It’s Not Me, It’s Them" – Blind Spot Bias in the Family Court System (an interactive CLE)
Presented by the New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children
Professor Kristin Nicole Henning*
Director, Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative
Georgetown Law
Professor Kristin Henning examines racial bias as a real and lived experience for people of color involved in the juvenile and family legal systems. Kris helps systems’ actors recognize their own biases and develop strategies to counter them. Her interactive workshop identifies dehumanizing language and attitudes that drive the legal system and gives participants concrete skills to interrupt bias as it occurs.
Participants will: (a) become familiar with research on the nature and scope of unconscious bias in the youth and family court systems (b) recognize their own biases and develop strategies to counter it; (c) understand the impact of blind spot bias on their advocacy as attorneys, social workers, investigators, support staff, and managers; and (d) develop concrete skills to interrupt bias and microaggressions affecting the people we serve.
This CLE is appropriate for attorneys, social workers, investigators, and other interdisciplinary staff within the court system.
