The Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section (EASL) presents "Freelance Isn’t Free Law in New York"
Many people working in the Entertainment Industry in New York do so as a freelancer / independent contractor. Effective in 2017, the New York City Freelance Isn’t Free Act (FIFA) established protections for freelance workers including the right to a written contract, timely and full payment, and protection from retaliation. Recently legislation has been proposed in the New York State Assembly for a similar statewide law [2021/A9368]. This programl will discuss the success of FIFA, possible impediments to a claim, the likelihood of recovery, and the efforts to enact protections for freelancers throughout New York State.
