Commission on Judicial Nomination Extends Deadline for NY Chief Judge Applicants to March 10
3.6.2023
The Commission on Judicial Nomination announced on Monday that it was extending the deadline for applicants for the position of New York’s chief judge until March 10. The deadline had been March 7.
The vacancy was created by the resignation of Chief Judge Janet DiFiore on Aug. 31, 2022.
All candidates who previously applied for the chief judge vacancy will again be considered by the commission. They need not resubmit their application materials.
The commission has 120 days to nominate and recommend to the governor seven well-qualified candidates. Once the commission makes its recommendations, the New York State Bar Association rates the candidates and delivers its recommendations to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
After the list of seven candidates is issued, the governor has 15 to 30 days to choose one of them. The governor’s nominee must be confirmed by the Senate to become New York’s chief judge. The chief judge oversees the state’s court system and is chief judge of the Courts of Appeals, the state’s highest court.
Applications may be downloaded from the commission’s website or obtained by contacting the commission’s counsel, Henry M. Greenberg, c/o Greenberg Traurig, LLP, 54 State Street, 6th Floor, Albany, New York 12208 [Tel.: (518) 689-1492; e-mail: [email protected]; Fax: (518) 689-1499].
